Green Energy

Green energy is an umbrella that covers energy sources such as solar, geothermal, tidal, wind, and hydro power. It came into popular use early in this decade and is now somewhat of a misnomer. Every company wants to be able to label themselves green, even when some companies don’t know what that means.

The Eugene green energy standard is an attempt to standardize what qualifies as green energy. In order to receive the Eugene seal of approval a utility company must pass several criteria. They must provide their power from a genuinely sustainable energy source. They must meet or exceed public demand using this source, and they must exceed governmental regulations regarding green power.

Other industries have developed similar standards to the Eugene green energy standard, and these are a step in the right direction. The more we utilize sustainable energy sources, the less damage we will do to our planet. Sustainable energy will be cheaper in the long run than continuing our current energy practices.
