Alternative Energy Sources

Alternative energy sources have been sought as long as we have been energy dependant. It may seem ironic today, but one of the first alternative fuel sources was coal. During the Middle Ages Europe relied primarily on wood for heating and cooking, but they were running out of forest to cut down. Coal saved them from further deforestation.

Now the concerns we need to address with alternative energy sources are quite different. Rampant release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere has brought about global warming, and we need energy sources that come without a carbon dioxide tag attached. The recurring spikes in nonrenewable resource pricing leads us to look for a renewable source of energy.

To meet this new generation of environmental constraints we turn to a new type of source. Natural sources such as the sea, wind, and the sun are just the kind of alternative we need to fulfill our energy needs. We need to rethink the power grid to adapt to the constraints of these sources, but if we do the rewards will be worth it.
