Energy efficient roofing is one way to home your entire home more green and consume less energy because of the insulation that is provided. There are many different energy efficient roofs to choose from and they come in a wide variety of materials. Shingles is proddominantly the most common roofing application, but it is not the most efficient. Because they are thin and overlap the shingles cannot provide a lockstep barrier from the elements and that is why underlying plastics are applied to the roof. Some companies will be able to offer you additional insulation beneath the shingles, but you will need to check with your contractor. Foams, polyurethane, and other membrane roofing is available, but it is typically regulated to commercial applications because of the cost of the material. You should also keep in mind however, that some more expensive applications will have large warranties that come with ownership.

When considering energy efficient roofing, consider a few things. One, how well does it seal and repel the elements – both warm and cold? Two, what is the cost of the materials and separately what is the cost of certified installation? Three, what is the expected lifespan of the material and how long is it covered under warranty? Lastly, how much of the cost of the unit is tax deductable under federal statues and what will be the final impact on the environment? With these questions in your arsenal you can discover the best energy efficient roofing available.
