Energy efficient refrigerators are available on the market today and are most identifiable at your local appliance store via the Energy Star logo. The Energy Star logo is placed on qualifying appliances that can reduce their energy consumption by 20 percent of the federal minimum standards. Most main stream companies will employ at least a few energy star qualifying models to their assortment, but you’ll have to look for them. Logo qualifying brands will reduce your energy bill by $165 over the lifetime of the fridge compared to a non-qualified energy star refrigerator. If you replace a fridge from the 1980s with an energy star qualified fridge you can save over $100 each year and if you replace a fridge from the 1970s with one with an energy star fridge you can save over $200 each year.

There are other ways to reach an energy efficient refrigerator without using an energy star logo. A couple simple ways are to note the layout of the fridge and the amenities. For example, a refrigerator with a freezer on the top will use less energy than a side-by-side fridge. Also, an automatic ice maker or an ice dispenser will also increase the energy consumption. If you’re diligent, ice-trays can cover this gap and make sure your refrigerator is as efficient as possible.
