Energy efficient furnaces are graded via the Energy Star system of the United States government. The project is a joint venture between the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. The way the furnaces are measured is by their annual fuel utility efficiency , the AFUE, which must by regulation be 10 to 15 percent more efficient than a run of the mill furnace. Those with Energy Star logos must also use highly efficient blowers to distribute the heated air through your duct system. These are only two components of your entire heating and cooling system however, and there are other things you can do to facilitate efficient usage.
One thing you can do, for example, is to outfit your home by sealing all of the ducting. This, by extension, adds onto your energy efficient furnaces by contributing to their efficiency. When you seal the ducting, you won’t have leaks and the blower will not have to labor as hard to distribute the desired temperature throughout the house. By reducing the need for the furnace you are consequently reducing the energy that the furnace has to consume. Efficiency has often been called the fifth wheel of energy policy by government officials because by simply becoming more efficient, we can reduce our need to consume.
