Energy efficient dryers, unlike most appliances, will not be highlighted by an energy star logo. The reason is that the energy star program, a joint venture between the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, conducted a survey that found that most dryers use the same amount of energy. The reason is that you have to have a certain amount of electrical power or gas power in order to warm the heating elements in a dryer. The process of evaporation because of heat is not very energy efficient.
The best things you can do to reduce the energy draw by your dryers occur before you use the dryers. The best thing to do is reduce the amount of time you need to use your dryer. With that in mind, you can increase the spin cycle on your washer. Most machines have a setting that spins the clothing pushing the water out of them through centrifugal force. The other thing you can do is let some materials dry outside of the dryer. For example, fleece is usually pretty dry after a spin cycle. If you don’t need the clothing the same day, you can always place it on a drying rack. Most racks are fairly cheap and allow you to dry multiple things because of a staggered zig-zag construction.
