Energy Efficient Dehumidifiers

It could be said that the most energy efficient dehumidifier is the one that never needs to be used. The key to energy efficiency has always been prevention. Reduce the need for the task at hand. If you can make your home or basement dryer through renovation to prevent humidity then you will not need a dehumidifier at all.

But if they are necessary, there are ranking systems available to gauge how energy efficient a dehumidifier is. The first is extraction capacity. This is measures in pints or liters per 24 hours, and tells you how much water the dehumidifier can draw out in a day.

Then there is tank capacity. This tells you how much water the dehumidifier can hold. For energy efficiency it is important to empty the dehumidifier, because it will not extract any moisture when the tank is full. Most units come with a hose fitting, so you can dispose of the water as it is collected and no energy goes to waste.

Energy efficient dehumidifiers have an energy factor, which is measured as the liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour. This is where the dehumidifier is different from other energy efficient appliances: the most efficient units have the higher number, where as with a freezer for example, you would be looking for the lowest possible number.
