Energy Efficient Chest Freezer

A chest freezer is the most energy efficient type of freezer. This is because of its horizontal design. Because the door of the chest freezer is on top of the unit, the cold air, which is heavier than warm air, cannot escape so freely. The weight of the door also helps to provide a strong seal. Chest freezers are roughly 10% to 25% more efficient than upright models.

Even though they are more energy efficient than upright models, it is important to monitor the temperature of your energy efficient chest freezer. Most new models will have a digital thermostat that gives precise control to ensure the temperature is at a constant reasonable level (typically 0 Fahrenheit). Having your chest freezer any lower than this will waste unnecessary energy.

To check if you need a new energy efficient chest freezer, and if your model is over 10 years old you probably do, use an energy consumption meter. These are available from hardware stores at a very reasonable price. An energy consumption meter will help you measure the average kilowatt-hour consumption of your chest freezer. Once you have a figure, go online and compare your figure to other chest freezers. If your figure is way higher than other models, it is time to upgrade to a more energy efficient chest freezer.
